How Real Can a Video Game Get?

Groundbreaking Concept Takes Players All the Way

Summary: The filmmakers of the soon-to-be released suspense/thriller film “GPS” that launched a real-life Treasure Hunt game have picked a five winners from thousands of players worldwide.  The winners will be treated to an exciting weekend playing a new groundbreaking live-action adventure game.

SEATTLE – November 16, 2006 -- Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be completely immersed in a thrilling adventure, as if you had stepped into an episode of “24” or “The X-files?” The winners of GPS THE GAME will be treated to an exciting weekend where they will be propelled into their own action-adventure story. This adventure is a groundbreaking new form of entertainment that will be hosted by BeTheAdventure.com

The winners represent different corners of North America, residing in Washington State, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Nova Scotia, Canada. They worked hard for their prize. Starting in June, players signed up at www.GPStheGAME.com and gained points by solving online riddles and puzzles, collecting clues to unravel the Mystery involving the same characters from the soon-to-be-released movie “GPS,” and by going on live GPS treasure hunts. Hidden treasure boxes found on the GPS hunts contained prizes, clues to the online mystery, and treasure codes that allowed players to gain access to more online puzzles. On October 31, the top players were entered into a grand prize drawing for the big Mystery-Adventure. There were five lucky winners: Gaylon Blank of Woodinville, WA; Amanda Karr of Greenville, NC; Bill Anderson of Salem, OR; Tim Patton of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Paul Dankoswsky of Enola, PA.

Next year, the winning players will be flown with a guest to Washington State, where “GPS” the movie was recently filmed. They will get a chance to meet actors from “GPS” the movie as well as the creators of GPS THE GAME: Eric Colley, the director of the movie, and Hallie Shepherd, the producer of the movie.  They will also receive free passes to a screening of “GPS” the movie, which will be released sometime next year.

GPS” the movie tells the story of a pair of scavenger hunt enthusiasts who embark upon a camping trip with a group of old friends, following the trail of a mysterious invitation with hopes of finding fortune.  When the trail leads them to photographs of a masked woman tied to a chair along with a new set of coordinates, their search takes a frightening turn. The movie was filmed at some of the most stunning locations in Washington State, including a 40-foot waterfall. The trailer can be viewed at: www.GPStheMovie.com

GPS treasure hunting has been growing in popularity for over five years with more than 250,000 active hunts in 200 countries. This relatively new sport has fast become a worldwide phenomenon. GPS treasure hunting is a sport in which “hunters” use a handheld global positioning satellite system, while combing forests, resorts, parks, even indoor locations in search of “treasure.”
